The Foul King (2000)

Dae-Ho is an unproductive bank clerk who is late to work every morning and the object of his manager's frustrations. He was a fan of TV wrestling as a child, but can't get out of a headlock. He finds a local wrestling trainer and through a series of events eventually starts to train. He is slowly transformed as he begins his second job as the cheating villain wrestler known as the Foul King. He starts to stand up for himself in odd ways that are not really in his own best interest. Events get out of hand as conflicting influences come together.

After he performs a dangerous dare-devil stunt at an air show, South Korean Air Force pilot Tae-hun is kicked out of the elite Black Eagles flying team and transferred to a combat unit where he immediately comes into conflict with ace pilot Cheol-hui. The situation quickly spirals out of control, leading the entire nation to panic. To prevent another nuclear disaster, Jae-Hyeok and his co-workers return to the nuclear power plant.

Captain John Smith (Anthony Dexter), returned fom the Jamestown colony, is telling his story before the Court of King James I (Anthony Eustral.) He tells of the unrest in the colony and how he set out to make peace with the Indians. He is captured and sentenced to death, but Pocahontas (Jody Lawrence) makes her celebrated intervention and, instead of a slaying, there is a wedding. Back at Jamestown, Smith makes efforts to keep the colony united and the Indians from attacking, in spite of the efforts of some in the colony who stir up trouble for their own gain. He exposes them and returns to England to give his report. He stays because Pocahontas, thinking he is dead, has remarried.

Several groups of people try to survive a zombie pandemic that unleashes itself in downtown Seoul.

While others not only boarded but also ride the Train to Busan (title of the live action picture), we also get this animated feature which plays in the same "universe" as the other movie. Having said that, you do get different characters in the starring roles and a movie that does indulge in what would happen if a zombie epidemic hit a city. Relationships between characters and story-lines begin to unfold, as much as some of the human psyche is.

It's a nice little add-on or spin off to Train to Busan, but it's not a must watch to get the other movie or vice versa. It's also very explicit with its violence as is the other movie and we get a lot of action scenes too. It does get a bit cliché here and there (father/daughter story) and has some minor flaws along the way. Even so it is more than entertaining to watch

A period action film centered on a militia group who turn against an unjust nobility.

We/I might not know this one particular story of Kundo, but we have seen this underdog story before. Which is not to be held against the movie, because it does a fine job telling the story of class distinction and the "small" people rising up against oppression. You might not agree with everything happening here, but you can't fault the movie or the story for that.

The action is more than decent enough and our hero against his own will, has a great journey to undertake. Some have compared this to some of the classic Japanese movies. But even if you don't agree with that either, you only have to like the story to get into it and enjoy the movie.

Young Park Seol-Hee is eagerly planning her wedding to a young anti-Communist activist when the North Koreans invade. Her fiancé is forced to flee, leaving her behind with her family in their tiny, rural South Korean village. Rather than resist the North Korean regiment that comes to occupy the area, the townspeople (to Seol-Hee's dismay) decide to cooperate with them in order to ensure their own survival. The North Koreans, however, turn out not to be all that Seol-Hee expected. She soon realizes that there is a history between her family and that of the regiment's leader, Lieutenant Kim Jeong-woong. In between the hilarious day to day antics of Seol-Hee's eccentric family and the hard realities of war, the attachment between Seol-Hee and Jeong-woong grows. As the occupation continues, Jeong-woong becomes torn between trying to follow the increasingly harsh orders from his general and protecting the people that he has come to love and care for so much.

The investigating Swiss/Swedish team from the neutral countries overseeing the DMZ suspects that another, unknown party was involved - all of which points to some sort of cover up. The truth is much simpler and much more tragic.

Author Stephen King discusses the various types of horror films and why they are so popular with moviegoers.

The third film in Turner Classic Movies "A Night at the Movies" series takes a look at the horror films that influenced Stephen King and the ones that scared him. This is basically a sixty-minute interview with the legendary author as he discusses what he feels works in the genre as well as where he thinks the genre has gone wrong. He states that the first film that truly scared him was BAMBI and then he relives the experiences of seeing movies like NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, PSYCHO as well as the terror he had going into THE EXORCIST. Many of the famous films are discussed but King also talks about some of the more laughed at entries into the genre like ATTACK OF THE GIANT LEECHES, I WAS A TEENAGE WEREWOLF and ATTACK OF THE 50FT. WOMAN. One of the most interesting parts of the documentary happens towards the end when King talks about some of his books that were adapted into movies. He talks about a pre-release screening he had of CARRIE and also talks about MISERY and how he felt that Dee Wallace Stone was better in CUJO and deserves more credit for her work. Of course, if King is discussing his own movies then you expect him to discuss his somewhat hatred of THE SHINING. King shares his opinions on the movie and why he and Stanley Kubrick had such a different opinion on what the story was really about. This documentary pretty much covers everything from the silents to the slasher period and up to today's torture porn. Fans of the genre will enjoy hearing some of their favorite films discussed and I'm sure fans of King are going to enjoy him sharing all these personal stories. This third entry in the series is certainly a major step up from the previous two but once again this film really doesn't seem to have any direction going on as the way the stories are told are all over the place and one wishes that it had followed some sort of order.
